Department of Information Technology

Information Technology
General Information

The department of Information Technology was established on the very day the college was founded on August 29, 2000. The department started its journey with the vision of promoting advancement of teaching and learning Information Technology through research oriented dissemination of knowledge. The department eyes at innovative application of information science as a service to the industry and the society. With the graduation of our first batch of sixty students in the year 2004, our mission tasted its first success towards fulfilment of our vision. Over the years, a large number of our students have proved their brilliance in serving the industry, academia and the society in general both in the country and abroad. The department has a rich mix of young and experienced scholars serving as members of the faculty. The guidance and encouragement that the faculty members provide to the students extend beyond the regular curricular activities and encompasses education through workshops, seminars, industry visits, quizzes, etc.

The department has a library which is in addition to the institution central library. The departmental library maintains stock of specialized books and study materials for ready reference by the members of the faculty.

The department maintains a strong industry-academia relationship by way of organizing workshops, seminars and training programmes jointly with government and private organizations like Cognizant Technology Solutions, Infosys Ltd., Metro Rail, among others.

Our students are encouraged to engage themselves in research and development activities from the second year of their study. This has resulted into a number of publications in referred journals and international conferences over years. The students of our department have to their credit the development of a number of in-house software products that have helped in automation of different activities of the institution. The students have developed a number of products that serve the society through various NGOs.

Our students have taken part in a number of national level competitions like Smart India Hackathon and established their mettle by securing top ranks in such competitions. They have also proved themselves by securing high scores in many of the MOOCS courses.

Vision & Mission

To promote the advancement of learning in Information Technology through research oriented dissemination of knowledge which will lead to innovative applications of information in industry and society.
1. To incubate students grow into industry ready professionals, proficient research scholars and enterprising entrepreneurs.

2. To create a learner- centric environment that motivates the students in adopting emerging technologies of the rapidly changing information society.

3. To promote social, environmental and technological responsiveness among the members of the faculty and students.

Program Educational Objectives(PEOs)
Graduates of Information Technology Program shall:
PEO1: Excel in professional career, higher education and research.

PEO2: Demonstrate professionalism, entrepreneurship, ethical behavior, communication skills and collaborative team work to adapt the emerging trends by engaging in lifelong learning.

PEO3: Exhibit the skills and knowledge required to design, develop and implement IT solutions for real life problems.
Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)
At the end of the program the students will be able to:
PSO1 (Programming): Apply the programming knowledge to build an efficient and effective solution of the problem with an error free , well documented and reusable code, user friendly interface and well organized database.

PSO2 (Multimedia and Web Authoring): Create multimedia enabled web solutions using information in different forms for business, education and the society at large, with the help of suitable authoring metaphor and taking into considerations the interactivity and human computer interaction aspects.

PSO3 (Software Engineering): Understand and analyze a big complex problem and decompose it into relatively smaller and independent modules either algorithmically or in an object oriented way choosing correct life cycle model and using effective test cases.

Intake Capacity

Intake Capacity approved by AICTE and affiliated to MAKAUT - 60

The department has four laboratories equipped with modern facilities of hardware, software, projection systems, internet connectivity, LAN.

The student-computer ratio is 1:1. Each laboratory maintains a stock register detailing the equipment history within it. One faculty member and a technical assistant are in charge of the overall functioning/maintenance of each laboratory.

The following laboratories are used for practical training of the students in the areas included in curriculum and beyond and to satisfy PSOs of the program:

1. Project and Design Laboratory: ( Satisfies all the PSOs , but specifically PSO3 ) Used for final year projects and third year mini projects.

2. Multimedia and Web Technology Laboratory: Satisfies particularly PSO2 ) Used for teaching special skills for multimedia and web based applications in curriculum and beyond.

3. System and Development Laboratory: ( Satisfies particularly PSO1 ) Used for teaching special skills for programming, development and analysis of algorithm, numerical methods , Database Management System etc.

Overall Ambience:

i. All laboratories are equipped with computers with latest configuration and requisite accessories.

ii. Two Faculty members (one of them is subject teacher) and one technical staff is available against a curriculum laboratory of 30 students.

iii. Master manuals, maintenance registers, attendance registers, log-in registers, performance sheet, students sample laboratory files and laboratory records are available in laboratories.

iv. 40 Mbps internet connection (dedicated for the college) always available in the laboratories with 12Mbps backup.

v. Students are allowed to use laboratory for self learning (MOOCS, study materials of foreign universities) beyond laboratory hours.

4. Industry sponsored R&D laboratory (Open Source Laboratory)

Activities : Research and product development activities of the faculty members and students.

Some of the products developed in R&D Laboratory

1. Alphabet Learning : Computer Based Learning Application – running in Autism Society West Bengal from 2015-16
